The Bowen Technique

What is The Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a highly effective soft tissue remedial therapy which, amongst other things, encourages the body to relax, realign and heal itself. The Bowen Therapist uses thumbs or fingers to make a series of precise, gentle rolling-type moves over crucial junctions of muscle, bone and nerve pathways. Sets of moves are alternated with leaving the client to rest for a few minutes to give the body time to respond before further moves are undertaken. It is during these pauses that the Bowen Therapist leaves the room - a little unusual, but a vital part of the treatment.

The Bowen Technique #02The effect of the Bowen move is to create a gentle 'disturbance' in the underlying tissue that prompts a central nervous sytem reaction which: stimulates energy flow; facilitates lymphatic drainage of toxins and waste; promotes good circulation; releases tension; increases mobility and encourages the body to relax, realign and heal itself. The treatment is subtle and relaxing and most of the work can be performed through light clothing (or directly on the skin).

Some people feel shifts in their bodies during and after a Bowen treatment and muscle spasm release can occur. While many experience immediate pain relief, improvement is just as likely to unfold over the next few days to a week. Clients also generally feel a sense of well-being and reduced anxiety.

The treatment session itself

lasts about 45 mins to 1 hour but the first one will take about 1/2 hour longer as a full case history has to be undertaken before treatment (this includes medical history and lifestyle).

How many treatments will I need?

Three to five treatments at weekly intervals are often sufficient to achieve lasting relief, although further treatments may be required.

Treatment Price

I currently charge £27.50 per treatment.

Other therapies

Owing to the fact that it may take up to a week for a Bowen treatment to take effect, it is important that other physical therapies (such as reflexology, massage, physiotherapy) are not undertaken whilst receiving Bowen treatments.
